I've just now noticed a new (I think) setup box in my Realtek HD audio settings for a port listed as "digital" (it appears to be an HDMI port). In Advanced Audio Properties I've tried setting speaker setup to 5.1 surround sound speakers.
POWERDVD 7.3 DRIVERS
I've tried both ATI's HDMI Audio Drivers and Realtek's. And from what I've read, the HD-DVD I'm trying to watch (Batman Begins) has a wonderful audio track.

If it's on 2 speaker, I'm missing full surround. If it stays on 6 speaker and gets forced to CLMEI-2, music is fine, but voices are hideously soft. While on 2 speaker, I'm able to use the Dolby Surround Compatible Downmix option, which is what I have been doing. Sometimes it stays on 6 speaker, but forces output to CLMEI-2, and sometimes it forces down to 2 speaker, with stereo output.

I can choose any of these, but when I start the HD-DVD I'm using, it gets forced to something else. When I start up PowerDVD, I can set the audio options to 6 speaker (choices are headphones, 2 speaker, use spdif, 4 speaker, 6 speaker, 7 speaker, and 8 speaker), and then in the output mode dropdown box I have the choices: No Effect, Dolby Pro Logic IIx, CLMEI-2, and Neo: 6. I have ATI's proprietary DVI->HDMI adapter, so I can carry sound, and the sound works fine in a stereo setup. I'm running an HDMI cable from my Radeon 4850 to the TV HDMI input, and then routing digital audio out from the TV to my receiver, which does not have HDMI.
